I'm certainly with you on that one. While I was in undergrad 10 yrs ago & high school 15 yrs ago, I can agree that, at least for the high school portion of my education, it was mostly about rote memorization (maybe with one or two extraordinary teachers as an exception).
I was also part of a learning & gifted program while in elementary school & adored it! I'm not sure yet if the district I live within has such a program, but when the time comes if it doesn't, creatively thinking about solving problems & looking at patterns in the world around us is definitely the kind of learning I am teaching my little ones.

Anne's thoughts seem to make a lot of sense. I wonder if there is some way to track how many times a podcasts is downloaded from your site. I don't know how to do that but maybe someone in the TLC at UB might have an idea. That way you would get a better idea of how useful the podcasts have really been.

I think that your podcasting efforts are worthwhile. In addition to some students being more comfortable listening than reading there are bound to be some who are more willing to download a file than actually come to your office or call you with a question. I like to think of podcasts as a way to cover the things you find yourself explaining every single day (How do I register for classes? How do I change my major? How do I apply for graduation?). Even if you cover a topic during an appointment you can always refer students to the podcast so that when they forget what you told them they can re-hear it :)

How about getting in touch with the teachers or administrators in the English Language Institute at UB? Many students who are accepted to the university take at least one course through the ELI and personell there may have some great ideas that would complement yours. You could ask for Barbara Campbell. I have worked with her in the past and I think she would be quite open to collaboration. If you do contact her, please say hello for me. :-)

This is a huge and wonderful topic full of possibilities!

What I'm really excited about is letting students keep blogs as their e-portfolios.

I put up a post on it here:

And then sharing their education foot prints with other similar students. The blog, and other tools like twitter, would capture what they've done, and written, based on the tags they've used. For example a student would tag a blog "physics" or "Phys405" for a specific class and this would leave a record of their activities out in the open for other to benefit from.

These education footprints could be shown to similar students, providing peer driven advising.

"Students like you who majored in x and did activity y, liked z next."

This architecture could just as easily be global as local.

The advisor then, would have a huge repository of successful pathways at their disposal. The advisor and the students would collaborate to help sort through others' paths, while leaving yet another successful path for others.

Clearly most of the comments are positive, and the main thing that you get out of them should be encouragement, but on the other hand, I don't think the voice comments should just be dismissed as being a product of sexism and ageism. Three people mentioned speaking slower and/or deeper, and the fact that more than one person felt that way indicates that it is a sincere concern, not just something bizarre that one person came up with. I have done a little radio, and sometimes I try to speak slower and deeper when I'm on the radio because it seems to come across better that way. I was at your presentation and had no problem with how you spoke. I was the one who wrote "Jillian is a star." I personally don't think you need to do anything to improve, but I don't like the maligning of people who made comments that were meant to be helpful.

I think that if attendees had had a difficult time hearing Jillian that they could/would have stated that on their evals...I can't hear you is quite different from "your voice is high and therefore you are not credible/mature." I immediately associated those type of comments with overt ageism. My partner Wendy and I were chatting about this and she wondered whether or not it was ageism coupled with sexist overtones...
